WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

Massage therapy is a non-invasive, soft tissue treatment therapy.  Massage Therapists are trained to use a variety of techniques in order to manipulate your joints and soft tissue (muscles and connective tissue). While Massage therapy is used to promote overall joint and muscle health it is also often used for all sorts of soft tissue injury repair.

HOW DOES MASSAGE THERAPY WORK?

Some of the most avant-garde massage therapy research has shown that Massage Therapy is effective at decreasing inflammation and increasing mitochondria production in muscle cells that were massaged after vigorous exercise.  Massage increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients to your muscle cells while decreasing inflammation, ultimately helping the tissue heal faster!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the benefits of massage therapy?

There are tremendous benefits achieved through regular massage therapy treatments from a Registered Massage Therapist. There has been a wide variety of research proving that Massage Therapy can reduce or eliminate pain, improve the mobility of stiff joints, improve circulation, improve lymphatic drainage, and reduce muscle tension. Massage therapy can also reduce painful contractions, nerve compression, and spasms.

What’s the difference between a Swedish massage and a deep tissue massage?

Swedish massage is made up of several techniques that are generally used to promote relaxation.  It is usually made up of long, soft techniques performed at a slow to medium rhythm.  Swedish massage provides a relaxing experience but the pressure can also be deep at times.

Deep tissue massage (also commonly referred to as sports massage) is intended for individuals who are either athletes or have a sports/work related injury. The treatment is more specific to the injured area and can at times produce discomfort. The techniques can be performed at a slow, medium or fast rhythm depending on the stage of healing or if the treatment is pre, during or post sport.

Do I need a referral for massage therapy?

No, you do not require a doctor’s referral to book an appointment with one of our Registered Massage Therapists. However, some extended insurance plans may require one to provide reimbursements.

Can I see a massage therapist when pregnant?

Yes. All massage therapists receive training in pre and post-natal massage. Massage therapists are highly trained in anatomy and physiology and are prepared to help new mothers-to-be with the specific ailments that arise.

How often should I get a massage?

Generally, what works for your neighbour might not work for you. The frequency of massage therapy really depends on your personal health and activity.  If you’re someone who avidly trains for marathons you would probably benefit from having a maintenance program with a massage therapist.
