Anxiety: How Acupuncture Can Help
Everyone feels anxious sometimes, especially in the current state of the world. Being stressed daily is not a healthy or normal way of being. If you find that you are someone who experiences anxiety daily or gets stressed easily in your day to day life, you may find it helpful to have an acupuncture treatment.
Acupuncture is a treatment technique used for a wide range of imbalances of the body, including anxiety. Those who suffer from anxiety know how difficult managing it can be. Often treatment plans include psychotherapy and anxiety medication. However, research has shown that acupuncture can in fact address the problem directly and can provide faster results.
How Acupuncture for Anxiety Works
According to ancient Chinese medicine, there are energy forces called Qi that regulate the body’s overall health. Like blood in our circulatory system, Qi moves throughout the body in pathways called meridians. When factors like stress, injury, poor nutrition, or a change in environment disrupts the flow of Qi, health issues start to arise. To restore the balance and flow of Qi, acupuncturists insert needles at specific points in the body. This brings back your body’s chemical balance by slowing down the production of stress hormones.
Most people will experience occasional anxiety at some point in their life during stressful periods; however, ongoing anxiety is not normal and should be addressed. There are different types of anxiety, with imbalances in different organs. Depending on where the needles go, acupuncture can cause the nervous system to produce painkilling chemicals, jump-start the body’s natural ability to heal itself, or stimulate the part of the brain that controls emotions, including anxiety.
How Often Should You Get Acupuncture For Anxiety?
The number of acupuncture sessions you’ll require depends on your personal needs, medical history, the severity and occurrence of your anxiety and how quickly your body responds to the acupuncture treatment. We generally recommend acupuncture visits one to two times a week for anxiety issues and the duration of treatment depends on how chronic the anxiety is, lifestyle factors, and whether you can reduce exposure to stressors that may be contributing to your stress and anxiety.
