Dizziness

Chiropractic Care and Vertigo

We all get a little dizzy sometimes.  It’s as though we can’t see straight, we can't concentrate or even stay upright without falling over. Many of us have even experienced “tunnel vision,” where your peripheral vision goes dark for a few moments. These feelings of unsteadiness can be troubling, but they are not uncommon to people who experience dizziness and vertigo.

What is dizziness and vertigo?

Let’s take a look at the definitions of both.

Dizziness: “describes a range of sensations, such as feeling faint, woozy, weak or unsteady.”; a sense of disturbed or impaired spatial orientation with no movement (Mayo Clinic).

Vertigo: “a sensation of motion in which the individual or the individual’s surroundings seem to whirl dizzily”  “false perception of movement” (Devaraja 2018).

Simply, “Does it feel like you are moving?” or “ does it feel like the room is spinning?”

If you answered yes, then you might be experiencing vertigo. If you answered no, but are experiencing a sense of imbalance and unsteadiness, you might be experiencing dizziness.

What causes dizziness and vertigo?

Some common causes are:

  • Blood pressure or circulation issues
  • Medication side effects
  • Anaemia
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s/MS
  • Inner ear disturbances/infection
  • Cervicogenic (neck related injury)
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Migraines
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

 Can Chiropractors help with Vertigo?

It’s not uncommon for patients to see a chiropractor or another allied healthcare provider for dizziness or vertigo. Within the first initial appointment, your chiropractor starts by taking a detailed clinical history from you. This allows them to determine if it is truly dizziness or perhaps vertigo that you might be experiencing. Through conducting a detailed assessment of your clinical history, your chiropractor can determine the root cause, as well as, accurately diagnose and come up with a proper treatment plan.

Treatment plans could include chiropractic adjustments or manipulations, soft tissue therapy and vestibular therapies such as Epley and Cawthorne head exercises.

Vertigo and dizziness can impair your everyday life, restricting your ability to perform even the simplest day-to-day tasks. Fortunately, our chiropractors and physiotherapists at The Clinic Health Group use innovative procedures and diagnostic techniques to assess, diagnose, and determine appropriate treatment plans to effectively treat dizziness and vertigo.
